Man arrested on suspicion of drink driving after van smashes into tram in Wythenshawe

A man has been arrested after a smash between a tram and a van put four people in hospital.

Hollyhedge Road in Wythenshawe was taped off on Thursday night while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Police investigating the crash, near Martinscroft Metrolink stop, confirmed a man in his 30s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

It is believed he suffered serious head injuries, but police have yet to release further details on his condition.

Three others were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A spokesman for GMP said: "Shortly after 8.30pm yesterday (Thursday) police were called to reports of a collision between a tram and a van off Hollyhedge Road.

"A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of drink driving - he was taken to hospital for treatment.

"A number of passengers were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

"There was a scene in place off Hollyhedge Road Road while investigation work was carried out. This has since been lifted."

Metrolink services on the Manchester Airport line were also suspended while recovery of the damaged van took place.

Enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 5757, or 101, quoting incident number 158 of May 16.
