Man arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a number of parked cars are damaged in Newcastle

A man has been arrested after a number of parked cars were damaged in Newcastle.

Police were called to Helmsley Road in Sandyford in the early hours of Wednesday morning after someone reported that a vehicle had travelled down the street and hit some parked cars.

Officers attended the scene and arrested a man on suspicion of driving whilst unfit under the influence of drink or drugs.

An investigation is now under way.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "At 3am today (Thursday), we received a report of a road traffic collision on Helmsley Road, Newcastle.

“It was reported that a vehicle had been travelling down the road and had collided with a number of parked vehicles in the street.

“Officers attended and a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit under the influence of drink or drugs. He remains in police custody and is assisting police with their enquiries.”
