Man arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving as police urge motorists to take care

A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving in Bristol city centre.

Police made the arrest at around 1.30pm on Tuesday (July 16) after the 49-year-old was suspected to have driven a vehicle dangerously on Union Street.

It comes as Extinction Rebellion protests cause delays on the city's roads, with police urging motorists to plan ahead.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: "There's been a couple of incidents in which motorists have been frustrated at the protest activity and have driven recklessly as a result.

"We will deal robustly with any situation where public safety is compromised.

"We have duties under the Human Rights Act to allow peaceful protests to take place and along with our partner agencies we’re continuing to work with the protestors to allow these to take place while being mindful of and mitigating the potential disruption to the public.

"Please stay tuned to local media and follow Bristol City Council, First Bus and Highways England on social media for details of the latest road closures, delays and areas where protest activity is taking place."
