Man arrested on suspicion of conducting ‘hostile surveillance’ at RAF base

  • A British man, Rashad Sultanov, 44, a dual UK and Azerbaijani national, has been arrested in Cyprus .
  • He is suspected of conducting "hostile surveillance" at RAF Akrotiri and sharing information with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
  • Sultanov was arrested on 17 July and is currently held in custody as extradition proceedings are underway.
  • The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised charges against him under the National Security Act.
  • This marks the first investigation using the National Security Act for alleged offences in an overseas territory, following incidents at RAF Akrotiri between May and June last year.
