Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after alleged hit and run in Newport

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an alleged hit and run on Tuesday afternoon.

A 22-year-old man was taken to hospital with "life threatening injuries" after being hit by a car on Wharf Road , Newport ,  at about 2pm on Tuesday, October 8.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop after hitting the man.

Gwent Police confirmed that a 24-year-old man from Newport is currently in custody on suspicion of attempted murder and a 38-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

The male pedestrian, from Newport, remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Members of the Welsh Air Ambulance service attended the scene and the man was later taken to the University Hospital of Wales by road ambulance.

The road and surrounding areas were cordoned off for several hours allowing for police to carry out investigations.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: "Officers are appealing for information from anyone that could help with their enquiries and would be particularly interested in hearing from motorists with dash cam footage who drove along Wharf Road around the time of collision."
