Ernakulam: Man arrested on charges of theft

KOCHI: Ernakulam Rural police on Wednesday arrested a 27-year-old man for alleged theft from a rented house at Muvattupuzha.

The arrested person has been identified as Abdul Abid of Wayanad. The accused had allegedly stolen two gold chains weighing around three sovereigns from children who were asleep at the house and a mobile phone. The theft took place early on July 4.

Police said that the accused was nabbed from Thodupuzha by a special investigation squad formed by district police chief (Ernakulam Rural) SP K Karthick.

The accused, police said, was working as a salesman at a textiles shop in Thodupuzha after getting released from prison in another case in January. He used to commit theft in the night by going out on the pretext of playing football. He was a history-sheeter with cases against him at Sultan Bathery, Vaithiri, Ambalavayal, Kondotty, Kalpetta and Ernakulam Central police stations.

The accused had made people back home in Wayanad believe that he was working as a cargo staff at Bengaluru Airport. Police said that the accused had confessed to having carried out thefts in Thodupuzha town.

Police said that the accused even used to steal from train passengers during his return trips from Wayanad. Police recovered 15 mobile phones, laptops, wallets and a tablet from his place. An investigation is on to find the mobile phone stores which used to buy stolen mobile phones from him.

A team of Muvattupuzha DSP Muhammed Riyas, inspector C J Martin, sub-inspector V K Sasikumar, assistant sub-inspectors Rajesh C M and Jayakumar P C, and civil police officer Bibin Mohan made the arrest.
