Man arrested in Scotland in connection with wife's death charged with her murder

A man who was arrested in Scotland on Thursday in connection with his wife's death has been charged with her murder.

Mark Barrott was the prime suspect in the murder investigation after his wife Eileen Barrott was found with serious injuries within her home in Naburn Fold in Leeds.

Emergency services raced to the house around 6.30pm on Sunday.

Barrott, 54, was seen travelling to Edinburgh by train after the death before making his way to Aberdeen and Moray.

He was then arrested around 4.30am on Thursday in the Elgin area.

Leeds Live reports that Barrott will appear before Leeds magistrates court charged with murder on Monday 23 August.

Mum-of-two Eileen, who worked at St James' Hospital, was described by neighbours as "lovely and hard-working" and they said she and her husband had been living in the area for over two decades.

Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust paid tribute to the staff nurse who first joined the trust in 1996.

A spokesperson said: “It is with great sadness that we have heard about the sudden and unexpected passing of Eileen Barrott.

"She will be sadly missed by all her friends and colleagues across the Trust. Eileen worked as a staff nurse across a number of departments since joining the Trust in 1996.

"This has been a shock to her colleagues and we’re doing all we can to support them at this difficult time.”
