Man arrested in hunt for Victorian woman

Missing woman Maryam Hamka, 36, was last seen at a Woolworths store in Brunswick. (AAP)

A man has been arrested over the disappearance of a Melbourne woman last seen leaving a grocery store a week ago.

Maryam Hamka, 36, vanished last Saturday after visiting her local Woolworths store at Brunswick, 6km north of Melbourne's CBD, and telling family members she planned to visit a friend at Brighton, about 20km away.

She was reported missing on Thursday.

Officers arrested a 45-year-old man at a Brighton property on Friday night and he is assisting police who are working to find Ms Hamka.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper says serious concerns are held for her safety, and her family is distraught, despite their sometimes problematic relationship.

He has told reporters it was not unusual for her to be out of contact with her family for several days but relatives became more and more concerned as the days passed and went to police to report her missing on Thursday.

They have been unable to reach her on her phone, and she has not been active on social media.

"They have serious concerns, as we do, for her welfare," Det Insp Stamper told reporters on Saturday.

Security-camera footage has been released showing her at the Brunswick Woolworths store where she was last seen.

Detectives trying to piece together her movements have appealed for anyone who saw her to come forward.
