Man arrested in Glasgow after bomb found underneath police officer's car in Northern Ireland

A man has been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of a police officer who had a bomb placed underneath his car.

Officers from Police Scotland caught the 35-year-old suspect in the Glasgow area on Thursday before taking him into custody.

The manhunt was launched after an explosive device was found underneath the vehicle of an off-duty PSNI officer in Eglinton, Co Londonderry, Northern Ireland, in June 2015.

A police probe began and a European Arrest Warrant granted after the suspect was tracked to the Republic of Ireland.

But the man fled to Scotland before being snared by Police Scotland today, May 21.

He is due to appear in court on Monday on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of explosives with intent to endanger life.

Police Service NI's Senior Investigation Officer, Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, of the Major Investigation Team, said: “I would like to thank Police Scotland colleagues for their help in arresting the man in the Glasgow area by virtue of a court warrant on suspicion of attempting to murder a police officer and possession of explosives with intent to endanger life.

“He is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court via video link from Musgrave Custody Suite on Friday 22 May 2020.

“Today’s arrest follows a direction on the charges by the Public Prosecution Service following which a European Arrest Warrant was issued in 2017 to extradite the man from the Republic of Ireland.

“However, he fled the jurisdiction and today he was arrested in Scotland and transported back to Northern Ireland.

"The police investigation into this incident remains active."
