Man arrested in connection with reported incidents in Downpatrick

Detectives investigating a number of incidents in the Downpatrick area over the weekend have arrested a 30-year-old man.

Police say at around 5.20am on Tuesday May 5, it was reported that a male was seen acting suspiciously in the Old Course Road area of Downpatrick.

"The male then got into a silver VW Passat and made off towards Killough, when the vehicle was pursued by a specially trained officer due to the car travelling at speed," said Detective Sergeant Foley.

"The vehicle collided with a bridge at the Station Road area, but continued to travel before being stopped at the Ardglass Road. The male was arrested on suspicion of a number of motoring offences, as well as arrested on suspicion to the offences which occurred over the weekend. He is currently assisting enquiries at this stage.

"We would like to thank the public for the information they provided to assist with our investigation. We continue to have a visible policing presence across the greater Downpatrick area keeping the local community safe."

On Monday, the PSNI said that shortly after 9:55pm, on Saturday it was reported that a silver Renault Megane arrived in the Crewhill Gardens area and one man armed with a suspected weapon got out of the vehicle. The male then allegedly re-entered the car and made off from the area.

Detective Sergeant Foley said: "In the early hours of Sunday 3rd May in the Glebetown Road area of Downpatrick, it was reported that a male in a silver Renault Megane got out of the car and pointed a suspected firearm at a house at around 12:20am. A short time later, it was reported the male returned to the house armed with the suspected firearm but left the scene on foot.

"We received reports that a number of vehicles were damaged at the Ballymote Walk area of Downpatrick at around 3am on Sunday 3rd May. A potential link is being investigated between these incidents at this stage."
