Man arrested in connection with death of woman found dead in burning car in Cork

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman found dead inside a burning car in Cork.

The deceased, named locally as Mary O'Keefe from Mallow, was discovered in Doneraile area at around 4.30pm on Thursday afternoon.

She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after gardai and emergency services arrived.

A post mortem to determine the 72-year-old's cause of death is currently ongoing.

Meanwhile, gardai have detained a man on suspicion of "unlawful killing."

A garda spokesman said: "A male, aged in 60s, has been arrested in relation to this incident on suspicion of unlawful killing.

"He is currently detained at Femroy Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

"The post mortem on the body of a female recovered from the burnt out car is currently ongoing."

Detectives will await a postmortem on the woman’s body before determining the next step of the investigation.
