Man arrested in connection with death of teenage cyclist Joshua Fletcher in Newport

A man has been released under investigation after a teenager died after coming off his bike in Newport last week.

Joshua Fletcher, 16, was involved in a collision with a Ford Focus while on his way home from college on Friday afternoon.

On Monday, tributes and flowers could be seen at the scene of the incident, which took place near the SDR bridge and the Blaina Wharf pub.

The driver of the Focus, a 28-year-old man from Rhondda Cynon Taff, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving on Friday.

He has since been released under investigation, Gwent Police confirmed.

Joshua, who had just started studying mechanics at Nash College, was described by his uncle Simon Tovey over the weekend as a "lovely lad" who was "crazy about cars and loved his rugby".

And on Monday police released a statement on behalf of the teenager's family thanking the public for their support and appealing for privacy.

“We would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support. We would ask that we are now left alone to grieve in private as a family," the statement said.

A GoFundMe set up by Joshua's auntie and uncle Samantha Fletcher and Simon Tovey to help the family cover funeral costs has already raised more than £10,000 since Saturday.

Police are continuing to investigate the collision and are appealing for anyone with information who has not yet spoken to officers to call the force on 101, quoting reference 2000377569.

Anyone with any dash-cam footage is also asked to get in contact. You can also report information to Gwent Police via direct message on Facebook or Twitter.
