Man arrested in connection with death of Scots woman appears in court charged with assault to injury

A man arrested in connection with the death of a woman at a flat in the Scottish Borders has appeared in court.

Rory O’Connor faced a charge of assault to injury when his case called in private at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

The 54-year-old made no plea and was remanded in custody pending a further appearance within the next eight days.

He was arrested by officers investigating the death of ‘lovely woman’ Diane Nichol, who passed away following an alleged ‘disturbance’ in Hawick on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Trevelyan Terrace at around 9pm but the 57-year-old was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Earlier today, Police Scotland confirmed a man had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

A force spokesperson said: “We received a report of an alleged disturbance within a flat on Trevelyan Terrace, Hawick, around 9pm on Monday, August 9.

"A 57-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A 54-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

"He is due to appear at Selkirk Sheriff Court today (Wednesday, August 11)."
