Man arrested in Bucktown burglary caught on surveillance video

April 18--A Wicker Park man has been charged with burglary in connection with a break-in at a Bucktown home last month that was publicized by a homeowner angry about what he considered a lack of police response to video and other evidence in the case.

Atwoyn Carroll, 20, who also goes by the name Andrew Moffett, was arrested Sunday in connection with the March 18 burglary in the 1600 block of North Bell Avenue, according to a release from Chicago police.

Police had previously said that the homeowner had returned about 1 p.m. on March 18 after leaving about 11:30 a.m. and found that someone had broken into his home. After filing a police report and waiting for three weeks for someone to come to collect evidence, the homeowner posted about his dissatisfaction with police response to the burglary on Reddit, then posted surveillance video of the burglary on YouTube.

On Sunday, Carroll was detained in the 2200 block of West Hirsch Street -- where Sabin Magnet School is located -- on a charge of trespass to state-supported land, according to the news release. Carroll, of the 1300 block of North Leavitt Street, already is on parole in two earlier criminal cases, for which he served time in prison. He also was wanted in connection with a July burglary case, according to court and state Department of Corrections records.

Carroll was sentenced to three years in prison in 2014 after he was found guilty of receiving or possessing stolen goods following an incident on June 13, 2014, in the 1200 block of North Maplewood Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, which some records indicate was his home block at the time. Carroll also was ordered to serve a sentence for drug possession at the same time, according to records.

Carroll was released on parole in February 2015, and at the time of his arrest Sunday, was wanted in connection with a felony receiving or possessing a stolen vehicle case involving a July 4 incident in the 1800 block of North Rockwell Street in the Logan Square neighborhood, according to court and police records.

Carroll was due to appear for a bond hearing on Monday.
