A man was arrested after allegedly 'shaking' a woman at Pontins in Southport on Saturday afternoon.

A 31-year-old-man from London was later arrested on suspicion of Section 39 assault.

He has been released under investigation and enquiries into the incident are on going.

Officers were repeatedly called out to the camp, with a number of other incidents dealt with as 'civil matters' instead of criminal complaints.

Guests at the Britannia resort reported seeing a significant police presence at the camp on Saturday, with one person saying they saw police stationed at the gates for 'hours'.

Other holidaymakers claim they saw police returning on Sunday, but it is unclear whether this was in any way related to the alleged assault.

The Lunar Bar on site was also closed early on Saturday night, with residents asking questions as to why the area was shut off.

However, it is not clear whether this was related to the alleged incident on Saturday afternoon.

Pontins Southport is run by the Britannia hotel chain , which also runs the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool city centre.
