VARANASI: A man belonging to Hukulganj area of Varanasi was arrested in Azamgarh on Wednesday for allegedly giving lucrative offers to poor village people to convert and embrace Christianity. SP Azamgarh Sudhir Kumar said, “Acting on a complaint given by one Jittu Sonkar, Kotwali police have lodged an FIR against one Ramchandra of Baghwanala area of Hukulganj in Varanasi under Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Ordinance on Tuesday late night.
On Wednesday morning, Kotwali cops succeeded in arresting him near Kartalpur crossing with over 12 religious books and literature on Christianity,.”
The matter came to the knowledge of police when Sonkar and other natives of Saraimandraj and neighbouring slums of Kartalpur lodged police complaint. They alleged Ramchandra was active in their localities for past three months. Initially, he would claim to end superstition and later started motivating them for conversion. On Tuesday, Ramchandra distributed religious literature on Christianity, police said.
“When he started addressing Hindu deities in abusive terms, locals opposed him. He then offered Rs 500 for each person present there,” said Sonkar adding, “Ramchandra was motivating people to embrace Christianity
