Man arrested for garbage truck theft

A man who allegedly stole a rubbish truck from Adelaide's CBD while drunk and unlicensed is facing several charges, after police tracked him to a nearby suburb.

Police said the truck's driver had left it parked near the intersection of East Terrace and Grenfell Street just after midnight on Tuesday.

But the vehicle was gone when the driver returned a short time later.

The truck was fitted with a tracking device and police found it dumped on Northcote Street in Gilberton, in Adelaide's inner north-east.

The alleged joyrider — a 37-year-old man of no fixed address — was located nearby and arrested.

He was charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle, driving unlicensed, drink driving and refusing a breath test.

The man was refused police bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.
