Man arrested for drug driving after crash and driving away on wheel rim

A man was arrested for being unfit to drive due to drugs after being involved in a crash that shredded his front tyre.

The motorist did not stop after the collision, unaware that he was driving on the wheel rim.

Blood samples were taken in custody by Greater Manchester Police, whose traffic officers recounted the incident on their Twitter account @gmptraffic.

A tweet, posted at 4.29am this morning, read: "The driver of this vehicle was so impaired that he had no idea his front tyre had shredded when he had a collision and continued to drive along on the rim!"

In 2019, there was a 20 per cent increase in the number of prosecutions for driving while over the limit for specified controlled drug use in England and Wales, according to a Ministry of Justice report in 2020.

The drug driving prosecutions rose from 9,687 in 2018 to 11,614 in 2019, while the corresponding figures for drink driving were 33,634 and 34,713, representing an increase of three per cent.
