Man arrested for cutting off and eating bears' penises to improve his sex drive

A man who allegedly ate sloth bear penises has been arrested.

The suspected poacher, called Yarlen, is a member of a tribe which treasures the species' genitalia for its supposedly potent sexual side effects.

The Pardhi-Behelia tribe in India think the animals' private parts are an aphrodisiac.

A manhunt was launched after police found dead sloth bears with their penises removed in a national park.

Yarlen, who was allegedly a major player in the tiger poaching trade, was caught in Gujarat on October 19.

He has been evading justice for years by using different identities, according to the BBC .

Ritesh Sirothia, head of the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department's task force set up to catch Yarlen, said: "We created a special cell to track him down and arrest him. It was our longest chase, it went on for six years."

He was previously imprisoned for a year after being caught with two sloth bear carcasses, which were both missing penises and gallbladders.

Sloth bear gallbladders fetch a high price on the black market due to their use in traditional Chinese medicine.

His arrest comes after pictures emerged showing the incredible recovery of India's last dancing bear.

Pictures of Raju from a decade ago showed him writhing in pain with a muzzle over his mouth and a rope threaded through a raw wound.

By contrast, he now appears happy and healthy at his new home, spending his days climbing trees, foraging for food and lying in the sun.
