Man arrested for allegedly hiding gun in childcare centre garden

Police have arrested a man for allegedly hiding a revolver in a garden bed at a south western Sydney childcare centre.

The .445 calibre Webley Mk VI revolver and 58 rounds of ammunition was discovered hidden in a paper bag in a garden bed at a childcare centre at Greenacre on September 5, 2013.

Detectives from the NSW Firearms Squad found the weapon when they raided the centre as part of an investigation into the illegal possession and supply of firearms across Sydney.

The gun was not loaded and was hidden in a garden bed outside the centre where children would not have been able to reach it.

But Detective Inspector Wayne Walpole said the gun could have been easily retrieved by anyone walking past the centre.

"That would make the firearm readily accessible to someone so that they could access it easily," he told reporters at the time.

"And perhaps hide it easily if the need arose."

Police used a sniffer dog to search the centre to ensure there were no other weapons which could harm children or staff members.

Detectives from Strike Force Glengarvin arrested a 30-year-old man at the South Coast Correctional Centre at Nowra on Wednesday.

He was charged with possessing an unauthorised pistol and will remain in custody to face Blacktown Local Court on September 27.

Police will allege the gun was hidden at the centre without the knowledge of the owner or staff.
