A man has been arrested on the roof of Government House in Melbourne after slipping through security.

Police were called to the building in the Domain Gardens about 7.45am on Monday following reports of an intruder.

The Victoria Police critical response team arrived and detained a shirtless man on the roof just before 8am.

Aerial footage showed a man being held down on the roof by three armed police officers in full response gear.

A spokeswoman for Victoria Police said the man was still on the roof shortly before 9am and would be removed when it was safe to do so.

Police vans, firefighters and an ambulance were standing by.

It’s understood the man received minor injuries.

Government House is the principal residence of Victoria’s governor, Linda Dessau. Dessau is visiting Singapore and Indonesia on official business.

A spokeswoman from Government House said the governor appreciated the swift response of the emergency services.
