Revenue officers seized a huge quantity of illegal drugs yesterday as part of an investigation into organised crime groups.
One man has since been arrested in connection with the seizure and is being held at Ronanstown Garda Station.
According to a statement issued by the Revenue, officers seized 155 kgs of cannabis resin and 35 kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €1.63m.
The discovery was made following a search of a vehicle in the Clondalkin area of Dublin and was made as a result of a joint operation conducted by the Revenue’s Customs Service and the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB).
Investigations are ongoing and a statement released today by the Revenue explained: “Yesterday (06/01/2022), as part of an intelligence-led operation, Revenue officers seized 155 kgs of cannabis resin and 35 kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of approximately €1.63m when a vehicle was stopped and searched in the Clondalkin area of Dublin.
“The seizure was made as a result of a joint operation conducted by Revenue’s Customs Service and the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB)."
Gardai released a statement to confirm that a 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene, and "is currently detained at Ronanstown Garda Station pursuant to Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996."
The public has also been asked to provide any information they have regarding drug smuggling to the Revenue in confidence on their confidential phone number, 1800 295 295.
