Man arrested as gardai seize €600,000 worth of cannabis during five search operations

Gardai carried out a series of searches early on Wednesday aimed at disrupting the activities of a serious organised crime group, seizing €600,000 of drugs.

Elite detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation swooped on five addresses across Dublin.

They also discovered €47,000 in cash during the early morning raids.

Part of the operation was focussed on trying to discover how the north inner city gang allegedly ended with sensitive garda information.

Senior officers decided to act after veteran criminals allegedly were given classified details.

One target of the probe was a retired garda officer, sources told the Mirror.

One source said: ”The NBCI carried out these searches as part of an operation to disrupt the actions and activities of an infamous organised crime group.

“The amount of drugs and cash seized shows the extent of the involvement in drug dealing by this group.

“The probe also centred on the alleged leaking of sensitive garda details to the north inner city criminal grouping.”

A garda spokesman said: “On Wednesday 29th September, 2021, personnel attached to the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) participated in an organised crime related operation, in the course of which five searches were conducted in Dublin.

“In the course of the operation 30kgs of cannabis herb with an estimated street value of €600,000 (subject to analysis) and cash in the amount of €47,000 was located and seized.

“One male suspect, aged 61 years was arrested in the course of the operation, to date, on suspicion of involvement in offences contrary to the provisions of section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2006, relating to alleged enhancing the ability of a criminal organisation to commit or facilitate a serious offence.

“The arrested person is currently detained at Irishtown Garda Station, pursuant to the provisions of section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.”
