Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found inside a home in Melbourne's outer north-east early this morning.

The woman's body was found at a house on Umbria Road in Mernda just after 4:00am.

Victoria Police said a 35-year-old man had been arrested and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"He remains under police guard," Victoria Police said in a statement.

"It is believed the pair were known to each other."

Officers also examined a car that was parked out the front of the Mernda Police Station. It was later towed away.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing," Victoria Police said.
