Man arrested and taken to hospital after residents left trapped in their homes in dramatic armed police incident

A man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences after a dramatic early hours incident on an avenue in north Manchester.

It comes after armed police and a number of ambulances responded to a 'disturbance' at a home on Annesley Road in New Moston.

Emergency crews - including dog units and several 'incident response units' from North West Ambulance Service - were scrambled to the scene at around 4.30am on Monday morning (February 8).

The avenue was sealed off by police cars and residents were told to stay in their homes and not leave the area.

Neighbours reported hearing shouting and loud music coming from a property late on Sunday night and police were called.

The noise started up again in the early hours and a much larger contingent of police arrived at the scene.

For several hours, patrol cars, police dogs, armed officers and specially-trained ambulances crews stood by.

New Moston Primary School was closed due to the ongoing incident.

The headteacher Miss Maynard wrote on the school's Facebook page: “For everybody’s safety I have made the decision to keep school closed today due to a nearby police incident.

“Please stay home and stay safe. School will hopefully be reopened tomorrow. Thank you and apologies for the short notice.”

Just before 11am the incident was brought to a close and emergency crews left the scene within minutes.

Greater Manchester Police said a 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences.

He has been taken to hospital as a precaution, they said.

One neighbour told the M.E.N that they heard shouting on the street in the early hours before police arrived, in relative silence, at around 4.30am.

“I heard him shouting, then nothing,” she said. “It all went quiet until about 2am."

Another resident said she tried to leave her house to go to work in the morning and was told by police that she couldn’t leave the avenue.

“They told me I couldn’t leave for my own safety,” she said.

“I had to call work and explain. We all got told to stay in the house.

“Police dealt with it and they’ve got him out safe. He came out walking.”

One resident said they heard music playing “full blast” at the house being attended by police late on Sunday night.

Police arrived on Sunday, left again and then returned for a second time at around 4am on Monday, they said.

They said: “He was shouting abuse at the police.”

The M.E.N understands that some residents in the immediate vicinity were asked to leave and stay with friends before eventually being told they could return to their own homes.
