Man arrested and homes evacuated as bomb disposal carry out controlled explosion on 'suspicious package'

A man has been arrested after police found a 'suspicious package' at a property in Salford.

Around 70 homes are believed to have been evacuated on Worsley Road in Eccles, as bomb disposal prepare to carry out a controlled explosion.

Officers were called to a block of flats on Wednesday morning to reports of a concern for the welfare of a man.

A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife, police said.

Nearby residents have been asked to leave their homes, and a large police cordon is currently in place on Worsley Road.

Pictures from the scene show a number of police vehicles, as well as a Royal Logistics Corps Bomb Disposal van.

Police are thought to have removed a package from the property, and a controlled explosion is due to take place in a car park behind Worsley Road.

One eye witness said at around 11am on Wednesday morning, around 'six to eight' police cars and vans arrived at the block of flats.

"The next thing a man was being taken out of the property," she told the Manchester Evening News .

"First it was police, then detectives, and then the bomb disposal van arrived.

"After about an hour the whole street had to be evacuated. We have not been told how long it will be until we can go back inside."

A resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "There was an incident at one of the flats at 11am this morning. A man was arrested.

"When he was taken away officers went in and found items of concern. A fire officer came and had a look and then forensics went in with masks.

"Then all the doors were being knocked on at around 1.15pm when officers said they were evacuating.

"Now we have a 150 metre cordon in place and bomb disposal are here."
