Suspected stabbing on Swansea pier: Man arrested and another in hospital

A 28-year-old man has been arrested after a suspected stabbing in Swansea.

Another man, 38, needed urgent medical attention on Swansea's West Pier and was flown by helicopter to Morriston Hospital. It is understood his injuries are not life threatening.

The incident on Sunday prompted a huge emergency service response with police and ambulance crews dispatched alongside police and coastguard helicopters.

Residents reported spotting a police helicopter and a number of other emergency service vehicles near to the Maritime Quarter.

There were reports of the helicopter landing on Swansea Beach next to West Pier during the incident.

Milford Haven Coastguard confirmed they attended the incident and dispatched one crew from Mumbles and their rescue helicopter from St Athan.

A spokesman said they helped to locate a male who was then airlifted to Morriston Hospital.

A second man arrested on suspicion of assault remains in police custody.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: "We were called to reports of an assault at 7.50pm last night near Trawler Road, Swansea.

"A 38-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in police custody.

The Welsh Ambulance Service sent three crews to the scene.

A spokesperson said: “We were called on Sunday August 16 at approximately 19:45 to reports of a person needing urgent medical attention on the West Pier in the Mumbles.

"We responded with one rapid response vehicles and two emergency ambulances. One patient was transported to Morriston Hospital, Swansea.”
