Man arrested after fatal shooting ends in series of car crashes

A number of cars were smashed as the man fled from police.

A man is in custody after a fatal shooting of a woman in Melbourne's west lead to a carjacking and a string of crashes as he allegedly tried to flee from police.

The 42-year-old woman was shot about 9:10pm on Thursday at a home on Romsey Avenue, Sunshine North, before she was driven to a nearby hospital by a man.

The pair had been in "some sort of relationship" for a few months, police said.

The 33-yera-old man, who police said had blood on his shirt, fled Sunshine Hospital before officers could speak to him.

A short time later he was involved in two separate car crashes on Furlong Road, Sunshine North, and a carjacking, before he was arrested in a nearby street.

Detective Inspector Mick Hughes from Victoria Police said the man had tried to hide a firearm, but it had been found.

"What we know is this poor woman's died as a result of a gunshot wound. What we don't know at this stage is how that gunshot wound occurred," Detective Inspector Hughes said.

"There's no other people involved.

"The people are known to each other so there's no suggestion there's any community concerns around this."

Homicide detectives are expected to remain at the Romsey Avenue home throughout the morning and a post-mortem will be conducted later today.

Two other women were injured in the car crashes but have been released from hospital.

Wally Ostrycharz lives close to where the man was arrested and said he did realise something had happened until the morning.

"Police came and put tape up, they came through my house and into the backyard," he said.

Police are asking for anyone who saw the incidents or who may have dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
