Pensioner murder horror: Woman in her 80s stabbed to death outside her southeast London home

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 80s was stabbed to death outside her home in south London.

Metropolitan Police officers were called to an address on Red Lion Place in Plumstead at 8.50am on Wednesday following reports of a man in possession of a knife.

Officers and London Ambulance Service paramedics arrived at the scene and found the woman in her 80s with serious injuries.

She was rushed to hospital, but sadly later died.

Another man at the scene was also reportedly threatened with a knife, but was not injured.

At 9.10am, a man in his 60s presented himself at a nearby police station and was arrested on suspicion of murder.

He was also taken to hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the victim and the man arrested are believed to have been known to each other and they are not looking for other suspects.

The woman’s family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Detective Inspector Dean Grice, who is leading the investigation, said:This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts remain firmly with the victim’s family during this difficult time.

“Officers responded swiftly to the initial reports and worked closely with London Ambulance Service colleagues to provide immediate care at the scene.

“A prompt and coordinated investigation has now been launched to establish the full circumstances, and specialist officers are continuing to support the family throughout.”

Detective Superintendent James Derham, who leads policing in the local area, added: “At this stage, we believe that this was an isolated incident and I want to reassure the community that there is no wider risk to the public.

“We understand the impact a crime like this has on the community and you can expect to see an increased police presence in the area. If you are a local resident, please do share any concerns with our officers on the ground or contact 101.”
