A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman and child were taken to hospital following an explosion in Manchester.

Officers were called to a report of an explosion at a house on Pewsey Road in Wythenshawe at 12.20am on Wednesday, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said.

Emergency services took a 32-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl to hospital as a precaution, police said.

Detective Inspector Christopher Potter, of GMP’s City of Manchester Division, said: “This was a nasty explosion that has caused some significant damage to a property and it’s lucky that no one sustained any serious injuries.

“Whilst no one was badly hurt, this has left those who were inside the property at the time understandably shaken and upset.”

Enquiries at the scene established a gas canister inside the house had caused the explosion, resulting in “significant damage” to the walls and windows.

Investigations are underway and the blast is being treated as an isolated incident, the police spokesperson said.

A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody for questioning.

DI Potter urged anyone with information to contact police on 0161 856 6060 quoting incident number 27 of 30/12/20, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
