Man arrested after town centre targeted by arsonists five times in one night

Police are investigating following a spate of arson attacks in Ashton-under-Lyne .

Overnight Saturday into Sunday, fire crews were called to the town centre five times in four hours.

The first was at around 11.25pm after rubbish was set alight at the back of a pub on Wood Street.

It then spread to the roof of Williams Bros Ltd carpet shop.

Two minutes later, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service received another call to Wood Street after a larger pile of rubbish was set ablaze in a rear garden.

The next call came just before 1.20am to Old Street.

A road cone had been placed on an outdoor market stall before being torched.

At 1.25am, another pile of rubbish was set alight in an alleyway on Fletcher Street.

The last incident happened just over two hours later.

Crews were called to a car park on Church Street after a tent was set alight.

Luckily no-one was inside at the time.

A 32-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of arson, and enquiries are ongoing.

Ashton Inspector Lee Derbyshire confirmed the incidents were believed to be linked, and that a 32-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of arson.

He remains in custody at this time.

Insp Derbyshire added: "Officers from Ashton town centre neighbourhood policing team are making further enquiries today, which include reviewing CCTV and speaking with potential witnesses to try and identify any persons responsible."
