Man arrested after throwing suspected gun into Dublin's River Liffey in broad daylight

A man was arrested after throwing a suspected gun into the River Liffey yesterday.

Gardai were alerted after the man, who is in his 20s, was spotted in the city centre at Merchant's Quay just after lunchtime yesterday with the apparent weapon.

As they arrived onto the scene, he threw it into the River Liffey and was then arrested at the scene.

The Garda water unit went into the river earlier today to recover the gun from the water, with dozens of onlookers watching the search take place.

Upon finding the weapon, they discovered that the gun was in fact an imitation firearm.

A garda spokeswoman told Dublin Live: "Gardaí are investigating an incident involving a firearm in Dublin 8.  The incident occurred on Merchants Quay, Dublin 8 on 13 January 2020 at approximately 2.40pm.

"Gardaí were alerted to a man who was seen in the vicinity of the Quays and allegedly in possession of a firearm.

"Gardaí attended the scene and detected the male in question who was seen throwing an object believed to be a firearm into the river.

"An imitation firearm was recovered from the River Liffey by the Garda Water Unit on Tuesday 14 January 2020.

"A male in his 20s was arrested at scene and detained at Kevin St Garda station. Investigations are ongoing."
