A man has been arrested after two ferrets were thrown at a car in Yorkshire.

A ferret-carrying box was allegedly also used to damage a number of other vehicles in Harrogate on Monday evening.

North Yorkshire Police said the ferrets were now in the care of the RSPCA.

A force spokesperson said the man, of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

The 25-year-old was detained by members of the public after a man was seen throwing the ferrets and using their box to smash windows and cause dents and scratches to at least a dozen vehicles.

Police appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

“This would have been a very disturbing and alarming incident to those who witnessed it, and we are keen to speak to anyone who has information that could assist the investigation,” a spokesperson said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 12190221285.
