It comes after frightened residents told the Record they only heard their multi-story block of flats had been evacuated after watching TV.

One pensioner, who lives alone high up the block told the Daily Record she heard on an early morning TV news bulletin that the block had been cleared of residents.

She said: "I was terrified that I had somehow been left behind.

“The report said the building had been evacuated and there I am watching that on TV in my living room.

“I got dressed and went to the lift. But it was not working, which made it even more scary.

Chief Inspector Mark Leonard said: “Police in Motherwell have arrested a 48-year-old man in connection with a suspicious device found on the ground floor of Glen Tower flats, Motherwell around 1am on Thursday, 12 December, 2019.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
