Man arrested after running red light on bike and crashing into police car

A man has been arrested for drug possession after crashing into a police vehicle on his bike.

On Sunday night officers spotted a man on an electric pedal cycle near Bootle Strand. When Merseyside police attempted to pull him over the man sped away running through a red light.

After a short chase, the man collided with a police car and attempted to run away from the scene. A 34-year-old was arrested on Merton Road a short time later and following a search was found in possession of suspected heroin, crack cocaine, cash, and a knife.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply drugs; possession of a bladed article; and possession of criminal property and currently remains in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Ben Dyer said: "This was some swift police work which has resulted in drugs and a dangerous weapon being removed from the community. The more organised criminal activity we can disrupt, the safer the streets, so come forward with any information and we will keep taking this positive action.

"If you have any information about the storage, supply and possession of drugs and weapons, contact us @MerPolCC or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or call 999 if a crime is in progress."
