Man arrested after rooftop drama on Northumberland Street

A man has been arrested following rooftop drama which brought Northumberland Street to a standstill.

Emergency services cordoned off the shopping street in Newcastle's city centre for more than an hour on Thursday evening.

Northumbria Police confirmed the force received a report a man had climbed on to a roof just before 7pm and was refusing to come down.

Officers and paramedics were at the scene.

A cordon was put in place across Northumberland Street by Marks and Spencer, and on surrounding Northumberland Road and Ridley Place.

Dozens of spectators gathered along the cordon as the incident, which lasted almost two hours, unfolded.

The force confirmed at about 8.40pm a man had been arrested, and Northumberland Street was reopened to pedestrians.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At around 6.54pm police received a report that a male had climbed onto a roof and was refusing to come down.

"The incident has now concluded and a man has been arrested.”
