Man arrested after reports knife was pulled in Belfast city centre bar

A man has been arrested in Belfast city centre after police were called to a bar following reports of a knife being pulled out in the premises.

The incident is thought to have happened on Saturday night in or near Dublin Road, close to the junction with Ventry Street, a few hundred metres from the Grand Opera House.

According to Police South Belfast, one of the force's weekend Get Home Safe Patrols were sent to the scene after receiving an alert from bar staff that a man on the premises had produced a knife.

They said: "Police swiftly arrived, detained, handcuffed and shortly after, arrested him for several offences; including possession of a blade or point."

In a post on social media, the police added: "We're here to keep everyone safe. If you're going to do dangerous things like this male did, you will be spending a night in a cell and a meeting with a Judge shortly afterwards."

There were no reports of any injuries or further disturbances and the matter was swiftly brought under control.

However, it prompted a reaction from one resident, James McGreevy, who commented on Facebook : "Great. So spiking, getting whacked for no reason and now knives in the pubs. Why would you go out for a night in Belfast? Quickly becoming a very unsafe place."
