Man arrested after Rangers coach Gary McAllister attacked on night out

A man has been arrested following a brutal attack on Rangers coach Gary McAllister .

The ex-Scotland and Leeds captain lost three teeth when he was punched to the ground in a seemingly random assault at the end of a night out with his wife.

The 54-year-old was set upon in Leeds city centre and treated in hospital for his injuries.

A statement from West Yorkshire Police read: "Police have arrested a man in connection with an assault which happened in Leeds city centre last weekend.

"The incident happened on Sunday, March 24 at around 4am where a male in his fifties was assaulted in Call Lane.

"The male victim was stood outside a bar when a man approached him and punched him in the face causing injuries that required hospital treatment.

"A 32-year-old male was arrested last night (28 March) in connection with this incident.

"He has been released under investigation and enquiries remain ongoing."

The Ibrox coach was waiting for a taxi with his wife Haley when the attack took place.

It is understood that he had surgery on his lip and needed 12 stitches.

McAllister had spent Saturday afternoon watching Rangers manager Steven Gerrard star for Liverpool in a legends clash with AC Milan at Anfield.

The former Scotland and Leeds United star was taken to Leeds General Infirmary and is now recovering at his home in Tadcaster, West Yorkshire.

McAllister played for Leeds from 1990 to 1996, a period which saw them become champions of the former First Division in England in 1992.

The former midfielder joined the management team at Coventry in 2002, after a period playing for Liverpool, and took up the post of assistant manager at Rangers last year.

The former midfield star has 57 caps for Scotland and captained the team to the Euro 96 finals.

McAllister played for Leicester, Leeds, Coventry and Liverpool over the course of his 23-year playing career.

He has also managed Leeds and Coventry and is currently assistant to Steven Gerrard at Rangers.
