Man arrested after 'punching police officer' in Bristol city centre

A man who punched a police officer has been arrested in Bristol city centre.

The man allegedly committed an assault at around 1.40pm in Colston Avenue today (August 6) and went on to punch a police community support officer who was sent to investigate, police said.

The man ran off but was arrested shortly afterwards in the Nelson Street area, a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary told Bristol Live.

A picture of the arrest shows the suspect being held down by officers behind a police van.

The man, who was arrested on suspicion of assault, remains in custody.
