The Metropolitan Police have arrested a man in his late 50s after a pregnant woman was left “traumatised” by an attack that saw her have a pillowcase forced over her head before being repeatedly punched.

Officers arrested the man at a residential address in Haringey on Monday evening on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, the Met Police said in a press release.

The police department had been called shortly after 7pm on Thursday over an assault that had occurred around half an hour before on Manor Road on Stamford Hill.

The 20-year-old Jewish woman, who is 27 weeks pregnant, was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries following the incident.

Police said enquiries are still ongoing to establish a motive.

At this stage, they said the crime is not believed to be linked to any other offences.

Speaking with the Press Association, Rabbi Herschel Gluck, president of the Shomrim neighbourhood watch group in Stamford Hill, said the young woman was left “traumatised” by the incident.

The rabbi said that “all parties” must do their part to ensure the safety of women and girls and said the issue should be “put on the front burner”.

Following the incident, police have been conducting patrols in the Stamford Hill area in an effort to provide reassurance to the local community.
