Man arrested after police uncover ammo cache during dawn raids in Tameside

A man has been arrested after police discovered an ammo cache during dawn raids in Tameside.

More than 100 suspected 9mm bullets were seized from a property on Stainmore Avenue in Ashton-under-Lyne on Thursday.

A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled drugs and possession of the ammunition.

He has since been released under investigation.

Properties on St Stephen's Avenue in Audenshaw and Rochester Close in Ashton were also searched as part the investigation into the possession of firearms.

A 35-year-old woman was given a cannabis warning at the address on St Stephen's Avenue, after officers found a small amount of the drug.

Cannabis and cocaine was also found at Rochester Close.

A post on the GMP Tameside South and West Facebook page said: "Tameside police units team up to raid three addresses in the hunt for firearms.

"Yesterday (Thursday 25th March) saw officers from the GMP Tameside Challenger Unit and Tameside District Tasking Team execute warrants at three properties throughout the borough.

"At around 6.30am, the officers raided the addresses, after warrants under s46 of the Firearms Act and s8 of the Police And Criminal Evidence Act had earlier been granted by magistrates."

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
