Man arrested after police 'rammed' suspected stolen car into wall

A police officer with a taser cornered and arrested a man thought to be driving a suspected stolen car in a dramatic confrontation.

The vehicle was tracked by Lancashire Police from Blackburn into Bolton before it stopped at a red light on Blackburn Road, Astley Bridge, at around 4.15pm this afternoon (Thursday).

A witness said they saw a police car approach and the man tried to reverse his vehicle away. But, as he tried to escape the officer "rammed" the other car into a wall close to the junction with Holly Street.

When the man got out, he was detained by the taser-wielding officer and arrested.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "There was a stolen car on cloned plates which was picked up by cameras in Blackburn. It was picked up and then followed to Bolton.

"It stopped at a red traffic light next to another car we believe was also stolen and was travelling in convoy and it was then blocked in.

"A police officer got out - he was a taser officer who had his taser with him - and he was able to arrest the man."

The driver of the second car escaped the area before he could be detained.

A number of other officers then arrived - including backup from Greater Manchester Police - and witnesses reported seeing at least four marked cars in the area.

Police left the scene around 4.45pm.
