Man arrested after police officers assaulted as they pulled over masked driver

A man has been arrested after police officers were assaulted after stopping a car for tailgating a fire engine during an emergency.

On Wednesday (December 22) officers were responding to an accident on Peter's Way in Bolton when they spotted a fire engine with emergency lights on making its way through traffic and being followed by a car.

The car failed to stop for officers and attempted to make off before being stopped by the traffic.

The driver was found dressed in a balaclava and there were various tools inside of the car.

A man - who was a passenger in the car – made off on foot.

As one officer attempted to seize the car keys, the driver squeezed his hand with force.

A second officer was injured as he attempted to detain the driver who caused injuries to his knee and ankle which did not require hospital treatment.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of going equipped and assault of an emergency worker.

He remains in custody for questioning.

Inspector Jamie Hibbert, of GMP's Bolton division, said: "This driver tried to evade police and assaulted officers when stopped.

"No one should have to be assaulted whilst on duty, and this behaviour will absolutely not be tolerated.

"We have a man in custody for questioning as we establish the full circumstances of this incident and the identity of the passenger."
