Man arrested after police officer slashed with machete in Forest Gate

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a police officer was slashed with a machete in east London.

Officers rushed to the scene at 11.50am on Sunday following reports of a man armed with a machete suffering a mental health crisis at a house in Forest Gate, Newham.

The officer was slashed in the arm while confronting the man. He was taken to hospital but has been discharged following treatment.

Emergency services remained at the scene while police officers attempted to engage with the man.

The London Fire Brigade helped several people escape from the address via a ladder. None were injured.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on Sunday night on suspicion of attempted murder.

He had a knife wound to his neck, which is believed to have been self-inflicted. He has since been taken to hospital where his condition is deemed non life-threatening.
