Man arrested after murder bid on Scots cop responding to horror Coatbridge incident

A man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a police officer was badly hurt in North Lanarkshire

Cops were on route to a separate call when they came across a ‘disturbance’ in Mitchell Street, Coatbridge, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A male officer, whose age is currently unknown, suffered alleged head and neck injuries while dealing with the incident.

He was rushed by ambulance to Monklands Hospital for treatment before being released a short time later.

John Dow was arrested in connection with the assault and appeared in private at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Monday.

The 35-year-old has been charged with assault to severe injury, danger of life and attempted murder.

The Coatbridge man is also accused of resisting arrest, a second assault to injury charge as well as threatening and abusive behaviour.

He made no plea and was remanded in custody. Dow is expected back in court on August 4.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were responding to a call when they came across an ongoing disturbance in Mitchell Street, Coatbridge, around 1am on Sunday, 26 July.
