Man arrested after lion cub found in apartment

A man has been arrested after a lion cub was discovered in an apartment in Paris.

Police were alerted after the suspect tried to sell the six-week-old female for €10,000 (£8,835), according to french newspaper Le Parisien.

The 30-year-old was reportedly discovered hiding in a cupboard at a neighbour's home in Valenton, in Val-de-Marne yesterday, while the cub was found on a child's bed.

The animal was described as in good health and has been handed to wildlife authorities.

According to Le Parisien, the suspect has previous convictions for theft, and ran to the flat with the cub to avoid capture.

Villeneuve-Saint-Georges reportedly said: "The case came from Montgeron in Essonne where it was learned a few days ago that an individual was trying to sell the animal."

An undercover investigator posed as a buyer, Le Parisien said, and "found a 30-year-old man well known to police for multiple crimes including burglary".

The man reportedly told police he had obtained the animal "out of kindness". Police believe he intended to sell the animal.
