Man arrested after hourslong police chase

Feb. 28--A man was arrested late Friday night in Indiana after leading police on an hourslong chase that began after he allegedly fired a gun inside a store in Chicago's west suburbs.

Vincent J. Toliver, 34, of Madison, Wis., is facing charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of stolen property, according to Indiana State Police.

Toliver allegedly fired gunshots inside a Walgreens store in west suburban Broadview on Friday night before fleeing the scene in a white 2004 Ford Expedition. Police pursued Toliver southbound on Interstate 294 and then eastbound on I-80 into Indiana, according to a statement from Indiana State Police Sgt. Kim Riley.

State police continued pursuing Toliver as he made his way eastbound on I-94. About 8:30 p.m., Toliver pulled over to the shoulder of the road near the Michigan City exit, state police said. The SUV then began moving slowly again and turned around to face westbound in the eastbound lanes before coming to a stop.

About 9 p.m., Toliver allegedly got out of the SUV, stood in the middle of the expressway and pointed a handgun to his head. He then put his hands up but did not surrender, state police said.

After about an hour of trying to negotiate with Toliver, police struck him "with a nonlethal weapon" and he was taken into custody, state police said. Toliver was taken to LaPorte Hospital for evaluation and then to LaPorte County Jail. Neither Toliver nor any officers were injured, state police said.

Police said the handgun Toliver used was stolen from Tennessee. Further charges may be pending in the case. Details on when Toliver will appear in court were not immediately available.
