Man arrested after hiding under a car to evade police during dramatic cat and mouse chase

Astonishing footage has captured the moment a man is arrested after trying to evade police by hiding underneath a car.

In the video - which you can watch above - a dramatic cat and mouse chase plays out after a man, Patrick McCabe, rams his car into a police vehicle before speeding away.

McCabe can then be seen driving at excessive speed down the wrong side of a dual carriageway, almost colliding with a transit tipper van.

Police helicopter footage also captures McCabe jumping over pedestrian railings and running across a busy road before crawling under a parked car in a bid to escape.

However, he didn't escape and was arrested at the scene following the high-speed chase.

Sussex police have now released video footage of the pursuit , titled "You can run but you can't hide".

The incident took place around 8.40am on Thursday, 21 November after officers were alerted to a man, Patrick McCabe, asleep in the back of his car at a petrol pump, in Copthorne Common Road, Copthorne.

Two police cars arrived on the scene, one parking behind the vehicle and one in front of the vehicle.

McCabe, 24, of Croydon Road in Caterham, woke up and rammed the police car parked behind his vehicle and made off from the scene.

Officers, assisted by the police helicopter, pursued McCabe who drove with excessive speed, almost collided with a transit tipper van and even drove on the wrong side of the dual carriageway.

The 24-year-old was tracked driving down a pedestrian path before fleeing from the vehicle and attempting to hide underneath a car in a nearby hotel carpark.

He was detained by officers and charged with dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and two counts of criminal damage.

The landscape gardener appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Friday, 20 December.

He was given a 19-month sentence, suspended for two years, disqualified from driving for two years and given 15 rehabilitation requirement days.
