Man arrested after gunshots heard and police chase drama in Leeds as officers cordon off Scott Hall Grove

Police responding to gunshots heard in two separate areas of Leeds arrested a suspect following a short car chase last night.

A 27-year-old man drove away from police when instructed to stop in Chapeltown but he was captured after he abandoned his car and attempted to flee on foot.

The man was arrested on suspicion of firearms, driving and drugs offences after a night terrorizing the Headingley and Scott Hall areas of the city.

The first report came through to police at 10.21pm, when residents in Balbec Avenue, Headingley, heard gunshots and saw a black Vauxhall Astra driving off.

A similar report came through just 23 minutes later from residents in Scott Hall Grove, Scott Hall.

At round the same time, the black Vauxhall Corsa filed to stop for officers in Harehills Avenue, Chapeltown. The driver abandoned his car in Frankland Place and the occupants fled on foot.

A 27-year-old man was detained nearby and arrested.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "He remains in custody on suspicion of offences including possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, dangerous driving, failing to stop and possession of a Class A drug."

Police scenes are currently in place at the locations involved for forensic examination and specialist searches to determine whether a genuine firearm was used.

People living close to the cordon on Scott Hall Grove said armed police were spotted searching under cars at around midnight.

One man who lives right next to the cordon said: “I heard three loud bangs at 9.45pm, then there was a delay, then I heard two more.

“I knew straight away that it wasn’t fireworks”.
