Man arrested after gardai seize €590,000 worth of drugs at Cork checkpoint

A man has been arrested after gardai seized an estimated €590,000 worth of suspected cannabis and cocaine.

Gardai found the drugs after carrying out a search of a car in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork on Friday afternoon.

Officers from the Fermoy Roads Policing Unit were conducting a checkpoint when they stopped the vehicle for road traffic offences at around 2.20pm.

After the discovery of approximately €380,000 of cannabis and €210,000 of cocaine, the driver, a man aged in his late 40s, was arrested, and the car was seized.

The driver of the car was taken to Fermoy Garda Station, where he is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1996.

A garda spokesperson said: “At approximately 2.20pm, Gardaí attached to the Fermoy Roads Policing Unit whilst conducting a checkpoint, stopped a car for road traffic offences. The driver, a man aged in his late 40s, was arrested and the car was seized.

“A search of the car was carried out resulting in the discovery of approximately €380,000 of cannabis and €210,000 of cocaine, both subject to analysis.

“The driver of the car was taken to Fermoy Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.”

The investigation is ongoing.
